Academically Prepared

NOJDS Academics

We believe that the key to educational success is a solid foundation. NOJDS employs a dual curriculum while constantly emphasizing the highest academic standards. By implementing Multiple Intelligences theory, it allows the needs and development of the individual students to always be of primary importance.

  • In the language arts program phonics, writing, and language development prepares students to read and appreciate literature, while learning to express themselves with creativity and clarity. Language arts skills are enhanced through weekly library visits, individual reading logs, and projects.

    The mathematics program
stresses problem solving in the everyday world and mastery of fundamental competencies. Children learn basic concepts through the use of manipulative and hands-on activities. Students also participate in an annual fall Family Math Night and a spring, city-wide, Math Contest.

  • Social Studies are presented in thematic units which facilitate integration of all subjects. Field trips coordinate with areas of the Social Studies curriculum and enhance study by helping children make connections to the world around them. Current events and social responsibility receive attention at all grade levels.

Science is taught through studying the textbook themes and participating in hands on science experiments. Third through Fifth grades create an end-of-the-year science fair where they display their independant science projects in a physical or computerized display.

  • Hebrew/Judaic Studies is taught in an environment which supports creative expression and critical thinking, rigorous study of Torah and hands-on experience of the holidays. Our students are surrounded by the sights and sounds of Jewish religious life and heritage. The empowerment which comes from real knowledge of Jewish history, beliefs, and practice is forever part of their lives. The acquisition of a foreign language, Hebrew, so vital a part of a comprehensive education, is an integral part of our program.

  • Special events occur throughout the year to help students engage in the learning process. Some examples include our Sukkot dinner, Thanksgiving Feast, Chanukah Program, Family Math Night, Book Fair, Purim Carnival and a Lag B'Omer Field Day.  We strongly believe that these programs are integral to the learning process and we invite parents to participate with us as often as possible.

  • In addition to programs that are student and faculty produced, all grades benefit from Field Trips outside of the school campus, such as the Audubon Zoo, museums, Second Harvest Food Bank, and theatre plays where our students are exposed to the richness of our culture and the arts.

  • Weekly classes in art, music, computer and physical education challenge students to expand their horizons and strive for creative and physical excellence.
