New Orleans Jewish Day School celebrates its B’nai Mitzvah Year!

By Max Vizelberg

On May 25, 2009 the NOJDS celebrated its B’nai Mitzvah year at Touro Synagogue. It was well attended by past and present students, parents, Board members and faculty members, all commemorating the thirteen years of the school’s existence. The evening gave many people the opportunity to see old friends while enjoying delicious food catered by Casablanca Restaurant. Former students were able to reminisce with one another and look at pictures of their classes, which were displayed in the Shushan Assembly. A slideshow presentation brought back many wonderful memories for kids and adults alike. In addition to viewing pictures, kids participated in several games, including a limbo competition and conga line. In the fashion of Bar Mitzvah parties, people danced the hora and listened to popular Jewish music, provided by DJ Rocky Bourg. Students from Kindergarten to high school seniors were part of a touching candle lighting ceremony. This year marks the high school graduations of the day school’s first 8th grade graduating class. Graduates will be attending University of Pennsylvania, University of Michigan, University of Maryland, University of Georgia, Bucknell University, College of Charleston, Fashion Institute of New York and Israel.

The community honored outgoing Head of School, Gwynne Bowman for her loving and expert leadership of the day school for the past eight years. Bowman has been with the day school since 2001 and graciously came out of retirement after Katrina to rebuild the school’s infrastructure. Dr. Bob Berk will be the new Head of School for the upcoming school year. The night was testament to the fact that the day school maintains an ever-burning spirit, which could not be extinguished by Katrina. Similar to a Ner Tamid, the light of the day school shines unto future generations.
